TITLE
Growing Intelligence
ABSTRACT
There is a view that the way to construct intelligent
systems to address real challenges is through emergence:
put enough simple mechanisms together and we will obtain
the behaviour we seek. Despite the appeal of the concept
of complex intelligence arising from simple emergent
mechanisms, there has been little achieved in this
direction. Here we argue that to progress in this
direction we should attempt to emulate the process of
maturity of biological systems, in that plasticity of
structures is combined with a set of carefully staged
learning tasks. In yet another variation of the theme
that everything you needed to know you learned in
kindergarten, this talk will argue that staged
development is essential for constructing large
intelligent systems.
This approach has guided research into intelligent
systems in a number of research projects. The application
of this approach will be illustrated by description of a
system that reads connected handwrittten words at high
accuracies, and its further application to machine
reading of large vocabulary handwritten information. To
illustrate the generality of the approach its application
to stock market prediction is also described.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Andrew Jennings was educated at Monash University,
receiving the PhD degree in 1979. He joined Telecom
Australia in 1980. In 1985 he was the founding head of
the AI Systems Section, a group which played a large role
in development of AI systems within Telecom. From 1989 to
1990 he was an STA Research Fellow at Kansai Advanced
Research Centre at Kobe, Japan. He returned to Telecom in
1990 and after attending one too many management meetings
he joined RMIT in 1993. He is the Professor of Computer
Systems in the Computer Systems Engineering Department.
MEETING LOCATION
Our meeting venue is Lecture Theatre 2, Basement Level,
221 Bouverie Street, Carlton. This is the Computer
Science Building of the University of Melbourne. Hints
on getting there:
1. The stairs to the basement are in the north-east
corner of the building. Do not use the doors in the
centre of the building front.
2. If tramming: Get off the Swanston Street tram at
Lincoln Square then walk north-west across the park.
Look for the five story grey-green building.
3. If driving: The building is 100 metres south of the
T-intersection with Grattan Street (the street that runs
past the southern border of Melbourne University. The
parking can be tricky during term time, so make sure you
get there a few minutes early to give you time to look
around. Usually, parking spots can be found reasonably
close.
