SPECIAL STUDENT OFFER on Tutorials/Conference - IEA/AIE-95.
As a result of increased sponsorship from DSTO, Business Victoria and
support from ACS (including AISIG), IEAust and international groups such
as AAAI and DECUS, we are pleased to announce significant new discounts
for students attending tutorials associated with the IEA/AIE95 conference
in Melbourne (5th June 1995). These tutorials cover Robotics, Pattern
Recognition, Evolution (genetic) Computing and Linguistic Geometry.
The new offers are conditional on early notification (please advise you
are considering as soon as possible) and will also be extended to all
students already registered for tutorials. Students accepting these
cut-price offers may be asked to help presenters setup their AV and other
small jobs. Further details are available from WWW or by email. Contact
IEA95A@dsto.defence.gov.au for more information.

Tutorials.
The Eighth International Conference on Industrial & Engineering
Applications of Artificial Intelligence & Expert Systems
"Old Arts Building" The University of Melbourne, Monday June 5, 1995
Morning Tutorials - register at 08:30
- Tutorial 09:00 to 12:30 (less 15 minutes coffee break)
TUT-1.
Intelligent Robotics: State of the Art/Applications
Prof Angel P. del Pobil & Prof Miguel A. Serna
Intelligent robotics is a subfield of AI that deals with systems that
perceive complex dynamic environments and act on them by means of
manipulation and motion to achieve stated goals. In this tutorial, a
survey of current research topics will be presented together with recent
applications, including the use of sensors, task and motion planning.
There are no special prerequisites for the tutorial, although a general
background in AI, Mechanics and Computer Science will be helpful.
The instructors are from the Universitat Jaime I in Spain.
TUT-2:
Knowledge Integration In Pattern Recognition
Prof. Yi Lu Murphey
A pattern recognition system often employs multiple classifiers to solve
complicated problems. This tutorial addresses the problem of knowledge
integration for combining output from multiple classifiers to produce more
accurate, precise and certain classification result. We will cover a broad
range of knowledge integration techniques including voting, Borda count,
logistic regression, Bayesian method, evidential reasoning and fuzzy fusion,
as well as design criteria and performance analysis.
The Instructor is from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
TUT-3: Cancelled
Industry Forum - Cancelled
[Persons already registered may transfer to another tutorial or request a
full refund.]
Afternoon Tutorials - register at 13:30
- Tutorial 14:00 to 17:30 (less 15 minutes coffee break)
TUT-4:
Evolutionary Computation Dr Xin Yao
Evolutionary computation is the study of computational systems which use
ideas and get inspirations from natural evolution. This tutorial will give
a practical introduction to genetic algorithms, evolutionary programming
and evolution strategies and present a brief overview of the whole field of
evolutionary computation. It covers both evolutionary optimisation and
evolutionary learning and is mainly designed for newcomers to the field of
evolutionary computation.
The Instructor is from the Australian Defence Force Academy.
TUT-5:
Linguistic Geometry Prof. Boris Stilman
The purpose of Linguistic Geometry (a name invented by the Instructor) is to
accomplish applications to manufacturing, space navigation, robotics,
planning, scheduling, VLSI design and other systems. This research includes
the development of syntactic tools for knowledge representation and reasoning
about large-scale hierarchical complex systems. It relies on the formalization
and transfer of search heuristics of highly-skilled human experts that have
resulted in the development of successful applications in different areas. It
is based on the broad application of the theory of formal languages and
grammars. The syntactic tools allow us to decompose complex systems into a
dynamic hierarchy of subsystems in the form of hierarchical networks of paths,
and thus solve intractable problems by reducing the search dramatically.

The Instructor is from the University of Colorado at Denver.
