My story...

I also bought my Dell Dimension 3000 in February 2005 with the Philips =
8631 DVD+-R/RW combo drive.=20

From the very first day i encountered problems with it. It would not =
read or write multi-session CD-R disks. When i read a multi session disk =
created in my previous computer using Roxio Easy CD Creator 5 Basic, the =
drive scans the disk constantly, causing Windows to freeze which results =
in me having to restart the computer using the power button on the =
tower. For troubleshooting, i tried reading these same disks on my other =
Dell Dimension 3000 PC with a Sony DVD-ROM/CD-R/RW combo drive. Thses =
disk read perfectly fine on this computer using the exact same software =
as the PC with the Philips drive.

I called Dell on a number of occastions for a fix to the problem. I was =
first told that if the drive reads other CDs normally then it is not a =
problem with the drive. I also updated the drive to the CD21 firmware =
from the Dell Support site. This did not fix the problem. I was later =
told i had to restore the system and try it again. This also did =
notsolve my problem.

Finally on 31 March '05 it was decided that the PC would be returned to =
have the drive replaced.

Yesterday (11th April) i got the PC back, and tested it this morning =
only to find that the problem has still occurs. And strangly the PC =
hadnt been restored to factory settings as i had expected. I did receive =
a repair note, from the "replacement" (i put replacement in inverted =
commas because i have a feeling that it was not replaced because it =
wasn't returned to factory settings).=20

Any help appreciated
