Subject: CD-Rom under DOS but...I need memory!!!!
Hi, guyd,
I've got a 6x Creatrive labs drive and I did have some trouble getting it
to work properly under Win95 DOS-mode. I eventually found out that the
setup installation program does not configure the I/O settings properly!
It invariably installs the CD-rom as being on the tertiary port when it
is actually on the hard disk primary port (in my case but it does the
same if it is on the audio card secondary port, i tried). So, now it's
okay, I've got my CD-rom accesible either in Win95 mode or in DOS-mode.
But the problem is that loading the drivers takes an awful amount of
memory at my DOS prompt!
Without loading the drivers, I get 605Ks available of conventional memory
but with the drivers on, it goes down to 540Ks. I've bee ntrying to setup
alternative configurations using EMS, XMS and loading all the drivers in
High memory. Still, I can't seem to get more than 550 Ks.
"So what?" will you ask me...Well, I 've got those old games on a CD pack
and they all require to be run in MS-DOs mode. They demandsome EMS memory
and -tha'ts where I've got a problem- at least 585Ks of conventional
memory...I've been playing around with the config files for 3 days but
can't seem to get anywhere.....Anyone got some tips on how to save a few
KS under Win95??
So much for Win95 supposedely breaking the 640K barrier....
