My CDROM drive is playing up - it fails to reliably read files from
certain regions of the disk. How do I service it?
Symptoms are as follows:
- I can do a full directory listing of the entire disk
indicating that some regions of the disk
(those containing the directory blocks) are not
subject to the problem
- during and after I do this, the CD spins very
quickly - I took off the top of the CDROM to have a look
- when I access a particular set of files on the CD the
the operating system (OS/2) reports "device not
ready" errors. Sometimes I can read the files, othertimes
I cannot. After it has attempted to access these files, the disk
spins much more slowly (even if a particular access attempt was
successful)
I suspect the problem is a mechanical problem, most likely in
the head carriage mechanism.
Does anyone know how to service CDROM drives? Are there parts
that I should apply machine oil or grease to? Are there parts
that I should not do this to?
Worst comes to worst I can replace the drive since it is only a 2x speed
and these seem to be selling for $95 these days. Still, I'd prefer to
fix it if possible.
Also, does anyone have a utility that can be used to step across
the surface of the CDROM drive in a systematic fashion? I'd
like to see if I can identify the regions of the disk that cause
the drive problems.
jon.
