applets please help

a friend of mine hangs around in the yahoo chat rooms. however he moved
house recently and reconnected, everything was fine untill he went to the
yahoo chat rooms and when it said loading chat applet the computer took him
back to the yahoo home page. i advised him (quite wrongly it appears) to
upgrade to ie5. he did this without problem, but still cannot access the
yahoo chat rooms. if he switches to html he can, but prefers java. can
anyone help.
