Java has the impetus of multivendor support.  Nobody wants to go with
a product that has only one or a handful of vendors.  What happens to
you if they go out of business?

Java also has the advantage of very low cost of entry.  Anyone with a
computer and a modem and some patience can get started on zero budget.

Going back a few years, there was no free Eiffel.
