I don't know about the other's but Borland's JBuilder 4 is free to download and use and isn't a trial version. ( it is about 30 MB plus another 25 - 30 Mb for documentation) Of course you can skip the IDE and just download the SDK from java.sun.com (also getting around the 30 MB mark ) As for books I am only learning myself and am currently using SAMS teach yourself JAVA2 in 21 days , I find it easy to understand and at the moment seems like a good starting place. brett Peter wrote: > I seeking some guidance as to a good Java IDE and introductory Java book(s). > > I have read numerous vendors sites and remain unsure as to what would be a > good Java IDE to purchase. > > The main contenders appear to be > > -- Borland's JBuilder > -- Symantec's Visualcafe > -- IBM's Visual Age for Java > -- Metroworks CodeWarrior > > All of the above produce 100% pure Java code so I am at a loss as to which > is the preferable IDE. > > In terms of value for money CodeWarrior seems attractive. > > I don't think you can get a good feel for a product until you do non-trivial > development > using it.
