java and proxy servers

Hey all

I am not a java programmer - just a user - but I was hoping that you might
be able to help me out.

I love the java chatrooms, and my office computer (using a LAN connection)
has no problems, but I cannot make the bugger work at home. I have an
inkling that it has something to do with the fact that I am accessing the
internet through a proxy server (I read something like that in an FAQ
somewhere).

I am running IE5, and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on
this. Is there anyway of changing the settings in IE to allow java chat
applets to work through a proxy server - or is my problem likely to be
something else?

Thanks in advance for the help

Tim
