jar tool and javax.swing not accessible -- help

Hi,

I'm running Redhat 6.1 and have installed Sun j2SDK13
The java stuff is in /usr/java/jdk1.3/
When I try to run
jar
I get a NoClassDefFoundError: java/util/jar/Manifest

or when I try to run an executable that needs to access javax.swing

I get a NoClassDefFoundError: java/swing/....

I'm thinking that there's something wrong with my classpath,
I have specified all the '.jar' files I could find in my classpath
variable. That works ok for regular programs. I can run javadoc and most
other programs including appletviewer.

What's going on.

I'm thinking if I cut out the jdk1.3 directory in '/usr/java/jdk1.3/'
and place everything in '/usr/java/' it might solve the problem, but
before I do that and create additional problems,

has anyone got any ideas?
