Is your applet AWT? Swing?

When you say you "want to change a textfield value", do you mean that you
want to alter it's value programmatically from inside code (eg: as the
result of a calculation or button bress), or do you mean that you want
something to happen in response to a user typing something into the textbox?

How do you mean to use the changed value to redraw the applet - what's the
connection between the value and the redraw? Are we talking like "the user
enters a coulour into the textbox and hits return, and in response I want to
redraw the display rectangle so as to show the new colour".
