Hello Daniel, I have written code that scans a database overnight for a customer. (this too has to run for over 8 hours). It does this using Suns JDK 1.1.8 on Windows 98 and have never had a problem (except my own bugs that were my fault). However I do not seem to think that 8-10 hours is not a huge burden for reliability. I used to run a java server (for simple database connections) on Linux. It was great (would run 4 weeks+ easy non stop) unless the server ran out of memory, then it would crash asap. This also used Suns JDK (1.1.7). I eventually changed this to servlets because these are even more reliable and other reasons. So my advice is that Java probably will not be your greatest problem it will be: a) Operating System, if your os wont run for 8 hours, no program ever will, b) Make sure you have enough memory as Java will use up heaps.
