extracting GIF/JPEG text

I have been trying (unsuccsessfully) to extract the optional text fields
from a GIF or JPG file using JDK1.01 (old but compatible with older
browsers).
Am I completly on the wrong track trying to use:
stringvar = img.getProperties("comment", this);
where img is the image and can be displayed using disply.
This just gives stringvar the value of java@object#237635 or similar.
Definatly NOT the text within the image.
Alternativly, does anyone know how to extract the bytes from an Image
object such that they can be used using InputStream? I can then do a
search for the text data myself.
This sort of thing MUST be done by someone as image files often contain
the original creators email/url and so on in plain text.
Thanks,
Daniel.
