I am trying to write an applet that saves to a file. My intention is to
click a button "save" and have the information held in the applet variables
saved to a file. The file should be on a local machine that is running the
applet. I need this to run on a browser not appletviewer Is it possible at
all?

eg when button "save" is clicked

          if (e.target ==save ){

    WHAT CODE DO I need here????????

              }

Thanks for help and examples

You'll need to sign your applet, and as for the code, RTFM.

With applets it's "impossible" to write to a file, they are specially
designed for Internet. They have restictions so nobody can do any damage to
a computer using a applet.
If there weren't restrictions I could make a applet which deletes all files
on a computer, place it on my homepage and everyone who uses the applet have
a empty HD ;)) I hope you understand what you want to do is impossible.
If you want to write files you have to make a application.

Not impossible with signed applets....
