I like Core Java by Horstmann and Cornell.
It has lots of explained examples too.
(That is the way I like to learn too.)

There are a number of reviews of introductory Java books on
www.techbookreport.com

I would add a vote in favour of Deitel & Deitel 'Java: How To Program', good
coverage of core OO concepts, lots of examples and reasonably comprehensive.

A very very good book for figuring out how to do things in Java (though
not a starter book) is O'Reilly's Java Examples In A Nutshell. It's
awesome after you've picked up the basics of java since it's full of
examples as the name implies.

There's another good book for learning java by O'Reilly called Learning
Java, it has some more basic info in it. Good Luck.
