NEWBIE: Java Applet to Read/Write

Hello there,
I am creating a simple program on my machine that is to run on Internet
Explorer 5.5 (I have my reasons!)

I need to be able to:
* Write data to a text file
* Read data from a text file and pass the information to JavaScript
* Print a JavaScript variable

I'm experienced with JavaScript, and have used Java before, though never
with applets.

I'm aware that the following can be done with Java, so if anybody could
provide some insight, it would be greatly appreciated :)

Adrian

Don't think this is possible because of security-standards of
JAVA-APPLETS... You cannot write anything down to a clients platform.

Maybe you can send a cookie with a Java-Servlet, but I do not know anything
about that.

=> Try to do it with a PHP-Script?

We have done this before in a project. You have to use a signed Applet. I
do not know the details though.

There's a new API out - the web application launch thingy or something. It
provides a standard way to get at files.
