Hi! I manage an intranet for a government based entity, and I am using Frontpage 2000. I am hoping to expand my knowledge base and want to learn some programming, such as java. Can anyone here recommend a suitable course or courses I could do to further my knowledge? I am Brisbane based but can travel interstate if need be. Trev.

Starting programming is difficult, because you not only have to learn a langauge, you also have to learn how to program as such. Learning Java may be a little ambitious. Other options include VB, learning to build macros in MS Office (VBA), and JavaScript. Your TAFE will have courses. JavaScript is nice because it is the language used to make active web pages. Since you are already using FrontPage, your existing skills will translate across nicely. You will also have no trouble finding sample code to hack up - just open any web page with active content and do a "View Source" in youe web browser. Materials on JavaScript are available at the httP//www.microsoft.com and http://www.netscape.com If you have your heart set on learning java, the place to go is www.javasoft.com . This is the site run by sun, and is the primary source for java materials. I don't know how good the materials are re learning from scratch - I have been coding for years and just absorbed the lenguage and API reference materials. However, there *are* tutorials there. Good luck. -------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.users.bigpond.com/pmurray ICQ: 26066755

Trevor, go to www.ola.gov.au , they have an online course...which is run by RMIT. I am doing it at the moment. Otherwise get a good book...one that comes to mind is: Java, How to program, and start reading.
