Another "book" I would also consider looking at is the O'Reilly Java
CD (Can't remember the exact name of it - could be the java bookshelf
or something like that). Whats nice about it is that you get a printed
version of Java in a nutshell which is quite a good quick reference
(not for learning, but once you have the basics down handy for
checking on something or getting a quick summary of some java feature
etc) and on CD you get "Exploring Java, java in a Nutshell, The Java
Language Reference, The java AWT Reference and I think one other which
I can't remember. Whats handy about the CD is you can access all these
books via your web browser, cut and paste examples which you can then
compile, hack and run etc plus you can do searches of any one title or
of all titles and because its on CD, you can easily take it with you
anywhere. Not ideal for anyone who is also learning
programming. However, if you have done programming in another language
or if you just want a handy java reference which you can carry to and
from work or whatever its pretty good. I'm not sure on the cost - I
was very lucky as I found it in the discount bin of my local bookshop
and it was only the same cost as buying just one of the titles in
paperback. I've found the O'Reilly series to be pretty good - conscise
and usually with the right amount of substance and clearly
written. Combine it with thinking in Java and you will have all the
information you will need for quite some time.

I learnt it by downloading the language reference and reading it.
