"java.util"... Where is it?

All,
I am having a very frustrating time trying to import java.util.*.
For some reason my Windows installation of JDK (1.1.8) can't import
java.util.*. Strangely I did not experience this problem with the Linux
installation.
The CLASSPATH environment variable seems to be set fine because everything
else is working ok (and there is no mention of a seperate CLASSPATH entry
for java.util.* in the included installation notes).
A good example is when trying to use the Map Interface. I've tried to
compile some example code for creating a Map from the Java Tutorial at
java.sun.com. It works fine under Linux, but under Windows 98 I get:
D:\java1\Freq.java.16: Class Map not found in type declaration.
Map m = new HashMap();
^
It looks like it can't find java.util.*. Thats about the only explanation I
can see.
I've spent ages hunting around java.sun.com and not come up with the
slightest bit of information regarding this problem. I've done extensive
altavista and deja searches trying to find others with the same problem but
I've had no luck.
Arrrgh! What am I missing?

Your kidding? Any ideas why on earth under the 'Complete Product List' on the Sun's Java website there is no mention of 1.2? ... only 1.1.8... *deep breath* Tor Iver Wilhelmsen <toriw@multinett.no> wrote in message news:wkaeiv1q0t.fsf@mail.multinett.no... > "Douglas Garstang" <doug@pobox.com> writes: > > > For some reason my Windows installation of JDK (1.1.8) can't import > > java.util.*.
