Has anyone had any luck getting J2EE running under windows 98? Win98 is not
supported, but j2ee is pure java, so it should run. In principle.
I'm getting there. This is pretty much my story. I'll add to it as I go in
hopes of getting feedback/comments etc from the newsgroup.
My first issue is that win98 command.com will not accept equals signs in
environment variables, no matter how I try to quote them. In the
bin\setenv.bat, this
set
ACTIVATION="-Dcom.sun.enterprise.activation.DbDir=%J2EE_HOME%\repository"
Gives me a Syntax Error. I've tried a few things to get around it. So I have
replaced it with this
set ACTIVATION_K="com.sun.enterprise.activation.DbDir"
set ACTIVATION_V="%J2EE_HOME%\repository"
and altered the final line of each of the bat files from this
%JAVA_CMD% whatever
to this
%JAVA_CMD% -D%ACTIVATION_K%=%ACTIVATION_V% whatever
I found that using right-click/edit on the batch files had the effect that
when I saved them, all the line breaks got removed. Probably due to the
unix/windoze cr/lf argument. Had to re edit everything and replace the line
breaks. Note to sun: if you are providing people with windows batch files,
they should have windows style linebreaks in them.
Next problem was out of environment space. I have created a dos shortcut for
each of the batch files with the "memory/initial environment" set to 2K, and
the "screen/lines per page" set to 50.
Now I can run J2EE and it starts up like this
C:\WINDOWS\Start
Menu\Programs\J2ee>C:\jdk1.2.2\bin\java -Xmx128m -D"com.sun.ent
erprise.home"="C:\j2sdkee1.2" -D"com.sun.enterprise.activation.DbDir"="C:\j2
sdke
e1.2\repository" -Djava.compiler=NONE -D"java.security.policy"="C:\j2sdkee1.
2\li
b\security\server.policy" -classpath
"C:\j2sdkee1.2\lib\classes;C:\j2sdkee1.2\li
b\locale;C:\j2sdkee1.2\lib\j2ee.jar;C:\jdk1.2.2\jre\lib\rt.jar;C:\jdk1.2.2\l
ib\t
ools.jar;.;;C:\j2sdkee1.2\lib\cloudscape\RmiJdbc.jar;C:\j2sdkee1.2\lib\cloud
scap
e\client.jar;C:\j2sdkee1.2\lib\jhall.jar"
com.sun.enterprise.server.J2EEServer
Redirecting the output and error streams to the following files:
C:\j2sdkee1.2\logs\home\ejb\j2ee\system.out
C:\j2sdkee1.2\logs\home\ejb\j2ee\system.err
J2EE server startup complete.
Woo hoo! Not only that, but I can enter http://localhost:8000 into my
browser, and I get the default welcome page coming up.
"J2EE 1.0 Default Home Page
Congratulations! Viewing this page means that your Web Server has been
installed correctly and is serving files properly.
J2EE-ri-feedback@sun.com
"
After some fooling around, I can get cloudscape hapenning too.
cloudscape -start
and
cloudscape -stop
each seem to be doing the right thing.
Of course, I wind up with a dos window sitting on the screen. I can fix this
by replacing
set JAVACMD=%JAVA_HOME%\bin\java -Xmx128m
with
set JAVACMD=%JAVA_HOME%\bin\javaw -Xmx128m
But I'll leave ir as-is for the moment, so I can see what's hapenning.
Of course, the "cleanup" batch file won't work because it relies on NT batch
commands, but I can do manually what cleanup does automatically, so it's not
a drama.
Next step:
1 - write a small java app to connect to cloudscape and comfirm that it's a
happenning thing. Do I need RMI to have cloudscape working? If not, then I
can use it as a database backe end without having to have the enterprise
server going.
2 - build the demo EJB app described in
C:\j2sdkee1.2\doc\guides\ejb\html\Started.fm.html
The final step will be
1001 - get a high paying job as an EJB architect, spend my days drawing
diagrams and arguing policy, and invest most of the income.
but that's a ways off yet.

I can create a table, append to it, select from it and drop it. Kewl. And the enterprise platform does not need to be running, just the cloudscape server. > 2 - build the demo EJB app described in > C:\j2sdkee1.2\doc\guides\ejb\html\Started.fm.html Yup, runs fine. Occasionally I get "permission denied" errors if I try starting things up more that once, or from a shortcut or something. But overall - yes, the Enterprise platform runs on Win98. The only thing to watch is the setup batch files.
