Gary, in System/Administration/Software Sources, click on the arrow
at the [Download From] line, and select [Other} That allows Ubuntu
to test connections and find the best update mirror for your
location. While there, its a good idea to check under the [Third
Party Software] and [Updates] tabs too, ensuring you are updating
everything. I select all third party options, but under the updates
tab, I always make sure I haven't accidentally selected the
pre-released updates option.

Judging by the complaints about updates wrecking Ubuntu 8,04.systems,
my guess is a lot of people are unwisely opting for beta testing
updates; then bitching when updates mess up their system.

FWIW with internet and update problems I always check here too:-
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/australia.htm#graphs
It seems more reliable than any ISP's site. If you check it out
quick, you will see there was a significant Australian outage in the
last 24 hours.
