One thing I've found useful in troubleshooting PLIP installs is this.

tcpdump. (/usr/sbin/tcpdump)

As root on the host machine, run tcpdump on the plip interface.

You need to write the output to a file via a tcpdump switch and
tell it to snarf a lot of data - say 1500 bytes.

(switches to use are in man tcpdump)

Then when your install fails, kill the tcpdump process with ^C and
run strings on the file (man strings) in this simple case just
	strings filename

That will give you a look at what is going on - the dialog the two
machines are having.

Oh, and you'll see your password and realise how insecure it is
to ftp to anwhere using your own username/password :)
