CD-ROM not working under linux slakware

I sucessfuly set up linux (I thought) installing it from the slakware CD
Now when I boot and login (as root) I can't use the cd-rom.
During the startup detect it reports that the cd-rom format is not
compatable and that no cd was found.
I have the CD as secondary master (ie /dev/hdc) the linux swap and native
partitions are on primary slave (hdb) win98/fat32 is primary master (hda)
I think maybe the secondary controller hasn't been enabled.
How can I check this and change it?
(I didn't install package "Q" do I need that too?)
I'm also having stacks of problems getting X to run. startx bombs
with heaps of errors. I've got a S3 ViRge 4MB PCI. Does anyone know
what settings I should use? even startx -probeonly bombs.
Thanks!
