The traditional incantation is:
F_LIB=/usr/local/lib/F
export F_LIB
Enter
echo $F_LIB
to see if F_LIB has been set to what you expect.
The "bash" manual page contains the on-line documentation,
which is really a reference and specificationfor use by
programmers:
A variable may be assigned to by a statement of the form
name=[value]
If value is not given, the variable is assigned the null
string. All values undergo tilde expansion, parameter and
variable expansion, command substitution, arithmetic
expansion, and quote removal. If the variable has its -i
attribute set (see declare below in SHELL BUILTIN COM-
MANDS) then value is subject to arithmetic expansion even
if the $[...] syntax does not appear. Word splitting is
not performed, with the exception of "$@" as explained
below under Special Parameters. Pathname expansion is not
performed.
Given your question, I'd suggest buying a good UNIX or Linux
beginners book. I learnt from Wang's "An introduction to
Berkeley UNIX", but this is pretty dated now. People have
said good things about "Running Linux".
Cheers,
Glen
