IF they don;t know the first thing about it, they don;t have the
*concepts* as basic as that, then installing and playing won't
help them unless they are exceptional.

It will just frustrate them, and turn them off.

Now there was a time (I date back to kernel version 0.99) when
you didn't have a choice.  No GUI tools, almost no beginner books, 
you just used what HOWTOs there were and kept at them till
they made sense.

Very few people bothered.

If he finds the man pages gibberish, and doesn't know what telnet
is or does, and hasn't got the idea to read README files, then
he needs some basics before playing will work for him.

Nowadays those basics are available, there are plenty of good
basic books that are aimed at people who are doing exactly what
he is doing.
