I can try....
OK.. the command you want is ifconfig, that's how interfaces go up and
down and do their thing.
You want to create a nice new network interface, which is a plip one.
Pop up a window with man ifconfig in it, and see what the options mean.
Pop up another one on the CDROM machine (which I will call the host) su
as root, then tail -f /var/log/messages so you can see what things are
happening.
Get a 3rd window up, su as root, follow the bouncing ball...
1) creating the interface
ifconfig plip up
that was simple wasn't it :) You message logging window should show
something like:
Jan 11 21:45:15 tasma kernel: plip1: Parallel port at 0x378,
using assigned IRQ 7.
2) configure the interface.
we'll use those famous "private network addresses" for this job. There
are several, the easiest to remember are the 10.0.0.0 network ones. These
are addresses you use when you are not playing in the iternet. LAter of
course you'll have a different "real" one for your 486 if it gets on
the net.
ifconfig plip1 pointopoint 10.0.0.2 10.0.0.1
read your man page.... that will tell you
that I have set the host box to 10.0.0.1 and the other end of
the link to 10.0.0.2.
3) check it works...
first do an ifconfig to see if it's really there
ifconfig -a
that will show you all interfaces. plip1 should be there in
all it's newly created glory.
This is one from another machine that's been used for transferring
redhat: (tasma hasn't had a working parallel port for years...)
plip1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr FC:FC:0A:00:00:01
inet addr:10.0.0.1 P-t-P:0.0.0.0 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:111504 errors:0 dropped:3 overruns:0
TX packets:111387 errors:31 dropped:0 overruns:0
Interrupt:7 Base address:0x378
Things to note - the netmask. The netmask is a weirdness whose use
you don't need to bother about. Just give the Mask as shown on your
ifconfig output (255.0.0.0 in the above example) to your 486 if
it asks for a netmask.
The 486's IP is 10.0.0.2
Hope it works for you...
