The responses you got are basically correct.
A bit more info though.
Note: these are just my own personal thoughts, I'm not a guru
just an average user, I could be wrong, but I don't think so! :-)
If you want a system which runs a graphical user interface (like
windows)
then 486 with 16M is a realistic MINIMUM. (Note don't expect it to be
blinding speed wise), Linux (and Unix) use a program called X-Windows
(or more commonly referred to as just plain X) which runs on top of
Linux
kind of like the way Windows 3.1 used to run on top of DOS (that's where
the
similarity ends, Linux and X are MUCH better!).
But if all you want is a machine to run a basic Linux system then
yes you CAN do it with a 386 and 4M, but don't even think about
X-Windows
, it'll be like like DOS a command line interface only (again only
better).
My guess is you'll probably want X (most people do). Then you may also
want some of the nicer user interfaces to X like KDE or GNOME (although
that's is stil beta software) in which case you'll probably want a
little
more, say a Pentium 60 maybe with 32M (you probably can do it with the
486 but I
wouldn't bother if you're actually buying a new system, of course if
you've
already got the 486 that's another matter, give it a go, I personally
haven't
tried it, Gnome 0.99 was a bit slow but useable on an Pentium 60 with
16M).
If you like nice Graphical Interfaces I HIGHLY recommend KDE, which is
freely downloadable and 1.0 comes with most distributions anyway.
I got it with my copy of RedHat 5.2 which I got from BowTie sotftware
www.kiki.com.au/bowtie, but it wont install automatically, you'll have
to install it manually after the base installation is finished.
(It'd good value to, on $5.95 including postage and handling, AND
you can legally install on as many machines as you want, get one
and share it with your friends! Of course don't expect support with
that but you've got the newsgroups for that right? If you really
want support you can buy an RedHat's Offical version, still good
value for $80.)
Oh, yes. Hard disk space, plan on an realistic minimum of 500M
a comfortable minimum is 1G, and with 2G you've got a nice little
system.
My own machine is a K6 233Mhz with 64M and 4G HDD which I dual boot
with Windows 95 and acts as my home server, I find this is a nice snappy
machine.
AMD's K6 (or even better K6-2) chip is also something I recommend, it's
much better value than the Pentiums and Pentium II's, you aren't
paying for the Intel brand name, and it's works superbly with
the various Windows flavours and Linux.
Hope this helps, it may be a starting point anyway.
Cheers

P.S. There are lots of other distributions of Linux, not just RedHat
They are pretty much all good, RedHat's just the one I'm used to.
