Thanks Bill,
an update after applying your advice:
>a) DNS server IP address goes in the file /etc/resolv.conf

>nameserver 111.222.333.444

done. do I need the "search" line?

>b) On which COM port is your modem under Win? Subtract one (1) from that
>number and remember it. I will call that number #
>Your modem is on /dev/ttyS# ( where # is that number)

found. I have configured using setserial to match the address/IRQ/UART that
win95 gives me

I downloaded it using W95, but the tar app tells me its corrupt and quits on
me. can I download .TAR files in win without suffering file corruption?

I think I have all the info I need for the ISP end of the link, but I can't
seem to get Linux to recognise the modem. I have changed the isapnp.conf
file to match these settings (I think) but dmesg only shows 2 serial
devices.

isapnp finds the modem board.

AAAARGH!
