Introduction
============

The Sydney Linux Users Group (SLUG) will be meeting on the last Friday
of this month, Friday the 25th October 96 at the University of Technology
Sydney, just opposite the Sydney Central Station complex. Meeting at
6:30pm for a 7:00pm start. More details are available from our web site
at http://www.slug.org.au

UTS is on Broadway just up from Central Station. Building two is the
engineering building. You get to it from the tower building level four,
on the left hand side through a set of revolving glass doors. You take
the lift in building two from level four to level six, and then find
room 639 (turn right on exiting from lifts). Note: Room 639 is NOT in
the main building but in the engineering building adjoining. There's a
GIF map in the SLUG Web pages. The room is kindly provided by Tim
Bayfield of UTS.

What is Linux ?
===============

Linux is a multiuser, multitasking and multiprogramming 32/64 bit fully
(POSIX) compliant UNIX-like operating system. The best news is Linux is
FREE and and it comes with gigabytes of FREE high quality applications
programs, device drivers, Graphical User Interfaces (GUI), graphics
programs, system utilities, internet and communication tools (eg:
email, http, ftp, Web software etc.). You can run Linux on Intel 386,
486, Pentium++ boxes as well as Motorola 68xxx, Sun Sparcs, DEC Alpha
(64 bit systems), SGI, and the list goes on.

No, the only fee you will pay is if you wish to partake in Tea, Coffee
& Biscuits at the nominal charge of only 50 cents.

about Linux. If your machine is portable, bring it to the meeting and
we will help you set it up. Contact one of us ahead of time to
prearrange any hardware hookup needed.

UP and COMING Presentations / Talks
===================================

Anybody with ideas for a talk is encouraged to suggest them.

In the pipe line is a "Office Products under Linux" night.

What will SLUG do for me ?
==========================

SLUG is primarily a meeting of the minds, a place to learn about
Linux(Unix), discussion on the latest applications s/w, system tools,
MSDOS, Win 3.1, Win96 and Win/NT connectivity and cross applications.
(This last group would be of keen interest to MicroSoft users eg:
aus.computers.ibm.pc'ers). Linux can be easily configured to look like
a LAN manager (ie: File & System resource manager for connecting
together numerous Win95, WfW, Win 3.11 systems using SAMBA).

SLUG members are made up of Professional, semi-professional, hobbyist,
and just those how like to play and gain knowledge of UNIX and the vast
number of FREELY available application packages. SLUG offers access to
Linux CDROMS, Video's, Magazines and Documentation especially to help
newbies experience the joys of using Linux. We assist all newbies in
setting up the machines and strive to answer all questions be they
related to inter-connectivity, applications, core system issues or
general "Does anyone know of a .... package that can do ......? "
questions.
