I've tried using minicom a manual login and the response is a standard 
unix "Login:" and "Passsword:" login sequence.

In one of our many attempts, if we told the chat script in the Systems 
file to expect the prompt nuucp\r\n while doing a tail -f on 
/usr/lib/uucp/.Admin/audit.local we could actually see the "Password:" 
prompt with the flashing cursor but in no way were we able to get it to 
recognise the prompt "word:"

By the way, the 2 machines are sitting (more or less) side by side in the 
office, dialing out on one line and in on another
