The next meeting of the Sydney Linux User's Group (SLUG) will be held: Place : UTS (University of Technology, Sydney) building 2, room 639 (Note this is NOT the tower building, see detailed instructions at end). Time: Friday Sep 27th, 6.30 pm What: Linux, the free Unix clone. This month, failing other offers, I'll give a talk. The topic for this month will be conferencing software, especially Vic, Vat and Sd. I'll also talk about CuSeeMe, and other conferencing systems, video, voice and whiteboarding. The talk will be somewhat technical, in that I may not give a demonstration. I will be talking especially about the underlying technologies, specifically RTP - real time protocol and multicasting. I will touch on various attempts to do conferencing systems using such things as reliable multicasting. If time permits, I will also talk about compression techniques such as H261 / H263 for video and some sound / voice compression techniques. So if you want to learn a little about emerging uses of Internet technologies this should be interesting. The relevance to Linux is that Linux supports Multicasting. Vat, Vic and other tools (nv, ivs are some other tools) also run on Linux. Of course, there will be our usual question and answer session... UTS is on Broadway just up from Central Station. Building two is the engineering building. You get to it from the tower building level four, on the left hand side through a set of glass doors. You take the lift in building two to level six, and then find room 639 (right from lifts). The room has been provided through the efforts of Tim Bayfield of UTS. Hope to see you there! As usual, tea, coffee provided. Jamie
