mouse problems under XWindows

I can't seem to load xwindows because it says the mouse is improperly
configured. I have a standard Microsoft Bus mouse. During the Linux setup, I
set it up as a microsoft bus mouse, when I boot up it says PS/2 mouse
recognized and configured (or something to that effect). I have tried the
Xwindows configuration with the mouse set as microsoft, PS/2, and bus; but not
one of those has worked. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
