[Q] Xfree86 and 24 bit

After hunting through the faq's and doco,

I want to confirm that what I have read is true.

A Xfree86 Xserver won't be able to do 24 bit colour on a 4M video card
when it runs in 1280x1024 res.

This is because it can't do byte/bit packing to get it into 24bit rather than
32bit.
ie 1280x1024x32 > 4Mb but 1280x1024x24 is < 4mb

I hope someone out there can prove me wrong, because i want to run 1280x1024
in 24bit .. without having to buy a 8Mb card or something.

OR!!!

Can someone point me in the direction of a PCI accel. video card that
can do 1192x900x32 (ie <4Mb)??

OR !!!

Know of a PCI accel. video card that has 5Mb of ram and thus can do
1280x1024x32 (ie 5Mb of ram exactly)??

Running 1024x768 is not an option. (its far to chunky on my screen)
I may have to fall back to 16bit colour (2.5Mb) but I still want to go
for true 24bit

(All experiences welcome!!)

Thanks in advance.
