I see a religious war coming on... :) No no, just a little bit of
friendly religious joshing. :)

Excellent sentiments. :) Try both, and see which suits your style.
Some people prefer emacs (*ackno!* :%d^M be unto thee, vile demons!
;)) and some people prefer vi. (*cheersandscreamsofhappiness*)

On a more serious note, emacs is an "editor with everything", so you
can do everything you want from inside it... it's designed so that you
fire it up on Sunday night after your big weekend, then shut it down
on Friday evening before you go out and party. :)

vi, OTOH, is merely an editor. You can't read news, email, or even
telnet inside of it... but then, why would you want to? :) It's
small, fast, and once you get the hang of using regular expressions
and mappings, *extremely* powerful. Oh, and you pronounce it "Vee
Aye", by the way. :) Not "vie".

Oh, and if you want to learn Perl, vi's regexps are identical, so it
makes sense to learn vi too. :)

OTOH, if you already know lisp, or some version of it, emacs allows
you to customise it in a big way with elisp programming.

In summary, Both are powerful, in different ways. Both have
*extremely* sharp and high learning curves, for the same reasons.
Emacs suits some people's style, vi suits others.

Try them both, see which one suits your style better. Of course, VI
is god, and users of emacs are spawn of the devil and all that... ;)
But that's just religious mutterings, which you can safely ignore. :)

Later,
