pppd - load and map errors

I am running Slakware 3.0, Kernel 2.0.0 as loaded from monash.edu.au mirror
site. I have also tried this under kernel 2.0.13 with same result.

I have read Robert Hart's PPP-HOWTO (Ver 2.2, 25/8/96) and the Linux PPP-FAQ
plus other documentation.

I've set up the 'options', 'resolv.conf' and 'chap-script' files as per
HOWTO, FAQ and readme files with pppd-2.2

When trying to initiate pppd (pppd-2.2) via any documented method I receive
the following error messages which, of course, cause pppd to terminate (with
a return code 16)

[Established PPP connection with my university site using minicom and exiting
without resetting line - I user this PPP facility regularly via Win95 without
problems. I have also tried initiating pppd and link similtaneously as per
pppd-2.0 readme files - same result]

# ppd -d -detach /dev/cua1
[1] 1011
darkstar:~# uname: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5.3.12'
uname: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5'
uname: can't load library '/lib/libc.so.5'
uname: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5.3.12'
uname: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5'
uname: can't load library '/lib/libc.so.5'
sh: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5.3.12'
sh: can't map '/lib/libc.so.5'
sh: can't load library '/lib/libc.so.5'

[1]+ Exit 16 pppd -d -detach /dev/cua1

I've checked that '/lib/libc.so.5' exists.
It is a link to the (existing) '/lib/libc.so.5.3.12'
'root' can read them ok (-rw-r--r--)

I've did a simple install of linux (first time for 2.0.0) but not first time
for linux).

I've thought about getting the pppd source and recompiling it. I've tried
compiling a new kernel ver 2.0.13 (I'm a newbie to this tho' but it seems
pretty straightforward)

Any ideas ?

TIA, David
