Actually, the version of XFree86 you're running is probably of more
interest.

Hmm, that rings a bell... (rummage, rummage)
Here's an extract from the latest XFree RELNOTES file:
| 8.8. Trident driver (SVGA server)
|
| o Known problems with TGUI9440 cards have been fixed (including
| interlaced modes).
This is XFree86 3.1.2G (beta), which is only a few days old. The
previous stable beta ('E') expired on 1st September, but G should
be good for a few months.
You can get binaries locally on ftp.physics.usyd.edu.au.
Incidently, I run an S3 (Trio64V+) myself using the accelerator driver
for S3 cards. It runs reasonably well, but ever few hours the server
will dump back to the prompt, and FreeBSD (which I run on this particular
machine) complains of malloc arena corruption. So - you take your risks
with betaware. :-( The erstwhile 'E' beta was pretty damn stable in
comparison. But - if you're like me and your card isn't supported as at
the last release - then there's little choice, really, other than not to
un X at all. If you call that a choice. :)

David
