Dunno if this will help, but I just installed redhat 3.0.3 and did
the network stuff this way:

at intstall, the software asks if you  want to set up networking. If
you have ethernet, say yes; if you have slip/cslip say no and set your
machine as 127.0.0.1.
Then you can use the netconfig application from X. What I did was 
set up for slip and make sure that my /etc/hosts, /etc/resolv.conf
were both set from my previous release. This is all I did in addition
to setting the machine name at install.
