Matt,

It would be nice if there was some real standard for where things go
but there isn't. Somethings are simple. System libraries ( X, Kernel,
Network, etc. ) usualy end up in /usr/lib. While libraries for
Compilers, and development usualy goto /usr/local/lib. The same is true
for most apps, includes, etc.

Typicaly you try to locate you binaries in a bin directory. So
netscap3.0 as a subdirectory is fine but you would also want to copy the
netscape executable to /usr/local/bin. The reason for doing this is so
you can keep your pth as short as possible. Also if you ever have
trouble you know what directories to start looking in.

As a general rule you try to keep /usr/bin and /usr/sbin for OS
utilities and apps supplied with the OS. /usr/local/bin is the
directory where most add ins like netscape, perl, gcc, and so on are
typicaly kept. This way if you have problems you can quickly tell if
its something you added or something provided with the OS.

But as I stated you are free to put files anywhere you want. Linux
realy wont care. Tho some apps may care.

One thing I like to do is try and use the default directories for
utilities I compile. This way if I have a proble I can post it in news
and know
that since Im normal I will be more likely to get a solution.
