Thanks to those who responded. I have found the problem.
It was connected to another problem I had, which I had regarded
as merely an annoyance:

When I switched on the monitor powersave features of the computer,
they worked correctly for a while, that is, after a certain time of
non-use the screen would blank, and after a further time the monitor
would switch into low-power mode. But after extended use this would
stop happening: the screen would blank but the monitor would not go
into powersave mode.

After a weekend of investigative timekeeping I discovered that the linux
clock actually runs slower when the monitor is in powersave mode.
This explained many things:
- why the time only seemed to change when I was away from the computer for
  a while
- why it only happened once, because after that the monitor no longer went
  into powersave mode.

So at the expense of some extra CO2 in the atmosphere my computer can now
keep good time.

My theory is that, once powersave mode was activated the linux kernel began
computing at near the speed of light, hence the difference in clocks...
	... alternative explanations welcome.
