bash - completion question ???

Just installed bash and I'm having a problem with <TAB> completion.

for example
	l<TAB><TAB>
produces a list of commands/aliases begiining with 'l' as expected. But
if I type
	vi test.<TAB>
to try and edit the file test.txt I get nothing but a beep.
bash does not seem to be performing file-name completion. Is there
something i've forgotton in setting it up.

Thanks for any help.

Kev.

P.S. I am in the correct directory and the file 'test.txt' does exist.
