I've fixed the problem! It turns out that the problem only
occurs when I am binding the del key probably due to some
hidden interference coming from the tty. Once I add:

   stty erase ^H

to free up the del key before the line:

   bind '"\C-?": delete-char'

in .bashrc, the problem is eliminated.
