linux kernel problem solved!?!

Well, thanks everybody for all the constructive responses to my linux problem

The problem has been solved as mysteriously as it occurred. The hanging I
was experiencing approx 10mins after startup seems to have disappeared.
Recall that I mentioned that in attempting to identify the problem I
installed a BARE kernel on a BARE machine - that is, I removed all extra
goodies like serial cards, ethernet cards etc. Well I was experiencing the
problem even after that but having left it for about 2 weeks in total
frustration, I returned armed with all the positive suggestions people
offered (including freon freezing fluid in my bag - prepared to spray all
chips to discover a buggy one). Anyway, I booted up my computer and it's
been fine since - 4 days so far.

I'm monitoring for any slight indication that the problem will return -
what frustrates me most is that I still don't know what it was but well,
it's gone...

Thanks everybody - I think the amazing feedback must of terrified the
problem away.

Cheers Justine
