I managed to solve my own problem - to anyone interested the
problem was not anything to do with boot parameters - I had
bypassed the option to partition my drive which RedHat install let
me do. The reason I did this was to test if my CD-ROM could be
detected. It was detected ok with "linux hdb=cdrom" by the kernel - but
I was getting an error message "bad fs or superblock" when RedHat
scanned for CD-ROMs. So today I partitioned my drive and it all went
well. Full install. So the moral i guess is to partition your drive
before you try the CD-ROM probe!

: Hi all,

: I just got RedHat 3.0.3 (blah i needed it for cheap Metro-X ;)
: I am trying to my CD-ROM drive detected at boot up here is
: the info (as much info as possible follows ;):

: Creative 8x CD-ROM connected to SB32 i/f which supposedly
: (according to my DOS device driver) emulates primary slave

: Unit 0, Slave, ATAPI, I/O address 0x01f0 the driver says

: I tried forcing it with "linux hdb=cdrom" also hda for luck
: and it detects the CD-ROM as:

: hdb: CD820E.1v1078300, ATAPI, CD-ROM

: as the kernel boots up. As my system boots up from reboot
: it doesn't detect ANY ide devices (I have SCSI hdd) so I
: guess the SB32 is doing something weird to make it look
: like a CD-ROM is on the slave of primary controller but
: Linux can't see what it's doing :) -- I've got no clue!

: Redhat sent me a cut+paste response which was less than
: useful telling me try things which I've already tried :-)
: i.e., I told them i tried "linux hdb=cdrom" and I told
: them the CD-ROM was on "hdb" - so they told me to try
: "linux hdb=cdrom" and switching the CD-ROM jumper to
: make it hdb - GLAD TO SEE THEY READ MY MESSAGE!

: BTW: using 2940.ker image for my SCSI card - I got the
: "updated" one from RedHat and put it on my boot disk
: and it proceeded to hang so I'm just using the standard
: one which detects my CD-ROM anyway but it can't be
: mounted. i.e.,

: It says something like "Bad fs or superblock" when I
: try to mount the thing! :)

: Can anyone please help out?

: Daniel.
