This is an annoying one..
you need to edit the keyboard map..

If your running RedHat.. go to ..

/usr/lib/kbd/keytables/

edit us.map

Go to the line that has 
keycode  14 = Delete           Delete

Change it to

keycode  14 = Delete           BackSpace

Reboot.. should be fine..

Simple.. your screen colours are being chewed up by fishtank..

Either run in a higher colour mode (-bpp 16) or don't run Fishtank..
or make fishtank use less colours.
