Hi Andy,

if you use Red Hat, upgrading to the 2.0.x series is really easy.
Remove the old kernel-source and iBCS packages with
'rpm -e kernel-source iBCS', then
'rm -rf /usr/src/linux /usr/src/linux-1.2.13'. Next, install the new
packages required for 2.0. You can get them by anonymous ftp to
ftp.redhat.com; they're all in the
/pub/redhat-3.0.3/i386/updates/2.0-kernel/RPMS directory.

To install those packages, run 'rpm -Uvh *.rpm' in the directory that
you put the packages in. You don't actually need to download all the
packages; just the ones that update packages you already have
installed. After this, build a new kernel by cd'ing to
/usr/src/linux, running 'make menuconfig', then
'make dep; make clean; make zImage'. Your new kernel is placed in
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/zImage -- move it to / or /boot or put
it on a floppy or wherever you put your kernels. If you use lilo,
update /etc/lilo.conf, and rerun lilo.

If you don't use Red Hat, you need to get the kernel source, and read
the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes file to find out about the
programs you need to upgrade. You can get the kernel source from
ftp.cc.monash.edu.au in the /pub/linux/kernel/v2.0 directory. The
rest of the stuff you need has pointers to it in the Changes file.
