hi there, this is really wierd and has been really getting to me. I've taken out the old Red Hat 2.1 archive CDs and installed(or tried to) on my newly upgraded system. The problem is that my CD-ROM did not get auto detected, so I had to enter 'linux hdd(or hdc)=cdrom' at installation boot up. ok, so I managed to install it. But then when I try to mount the cd-rom(to install other stuff) after the initial installation, it gives the error message 'hdc(or hdd) is not a block device'. wot gives? I tried recompiling the kernel(1.2.13) for IDE/ATAPI support, and still no dice. (its mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /cdrom, right?) oh, the recompiling was wierd. I was'nt left with a Image file in the /usr/src/linux directory...actually I was left with a vmlinux file...hmmm... and I copied that file over the vmlinuz in / another thing is that I tried the old slackware 3.0 CD as well. and it does'nt recognise my CD-ROM, even though it did so and I've had successful installs before(a couple months back). this is my system configuration: cyrix M1-120 triton 2 VX motherboard 1.2 gig fireball (E)IDE HD 4X Mitsumi IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM 16 megs EDO ram S3 trio64V+ I upgraded from a cyrix 486dx2-66. I'd appreciate it if someone would reply here, and also to my account. I'm really looking forward to the ip masquarding in kernel 2.x, so I'd like to resolve this as soon as possible, thanks! oh yeah, another prob. I'd like to upgrade to kernel 2.0.6 via the red hat rpms, so i ftped the upgrade from their site. however, since i'm running version 2.1 of the red hat distribution, I have only version 1.4 of the rpm. how do I upgrade my rpm program? (I did find a file called rpm-2.0????!!! but it was in rpm format!!!!!) thanks a lot!!!! drew
