snippo ---------------------------------> > There are two RedHat releases, the official one which includes MetroX > server and license to use it and the archives, which doesn't. The best > price for the former is around $50 and the best price for the latter is > around $24. Even the 6CD Infomagic Set is only $24. PP extra. $50 is > too much. > Much better for the Linux movement in general if people who try linux out consider the experience positive and worthwhile. In my opinion (highly computer literate with no previous UNIX experience until 3 months ago), the RedHat consumer experience will make newbies more likely to stick with Linux. You get a book, which some people prefer, to prime the mental pump in preparation for a massive jargon/skill change. I went through 7 different sorts (flavours/varieties?) of Linux before jumping on the Official RedHat 3.0.3 wagon. When InfoMagic August comes out, I would recommend getting it (obviously) and the RedHat 3.0.3 Manual, which can be purchased separately (around $20). That way a newbie can get the best possible Linux experience (minus the MetroX server) from scratch, and try out the other varieties of Linux as their skill matures. I'm sure the boys (and girls?) at RedHat are laughing all the way to the bank. Bet your boots that they did their sums, checked the sales forecasting graphs and did a little supply/demand math. $50 is a damn sight cheaper than something like LinuxFT and a godsend if you have exotic/unsupported video hardware. These are my views and may not represent the views held by the University of Southern Queensland. Michelle*-)
