Why should I use Linux rather than w95? : maniac, : maniac@bbs.nitco.com Don't wish to start a flame war....... Yesyou can have dos and linux on same partition.....I wouldn't recommennd it as linux works a lot better on it's own partition and filesystem.... The choice of linux over win95 is up to you....... Me I 'm an Linux - OS/2 user.....I use them both becasue they are reliable....whereas expereinces with win95 lead me to say don't rely on it....I've seen win95 remove partition tables, and other wonderful events... todate (touch wood) linux nor OS/2 have ever done this neither the release code or the beta code....I can power down my system in the middle of either with the confidence that 99.9% of time system will restart with no dramas....I won't say 100% becasue that's tempting fate as they are multi-tasking environments, and if they were in the middle of access (write) to a file of course those files have to be bogus.... It comes down to you as what type of computer person you are..... If you are just wanting to use the system to run programs and play games well linux is not for you.....as it's something that has to be configured properely( by your self) and if people aren't really computer aware it's very difficult. If you are programming well linux is extermely stable development platform, I don't recall having broken linux from my dirty code, unlike OS/2 where I have successully brought it down around my ears...:-) There is a lot of free stuff for linux, and if your are a programmer you can port applications from other unix oses with minimal changes....as long as you aim for the right stuff, iin that the code isn't too OS dependent. Linux is fast, effiecent and powerful.....you can get it to do many things....there are dos emulators, windows emulators....if you really need that stuff.....But you do need good knowledge of how unix systems function and depending on what you want to do other skills are required. cya JOe
