Hello,

In simple words, you want a NAS?

But what should the NAS do with the MODEM? Should it be accessible from the
WAN too or only from your LAN?

If your MODEM/router combo DSL-G604T (D-Link?) has an USB port for
connecting a printer, a web-cam or any other stuff, it can certainly handle
any not too big (less than 400 MB) FAT32 formated HDD over the FTP protocol.

If not... You'll have to buy a NAS; they're becoming cheaper now.

But what you'll get is only what comes out of the box: a cheap hardware,
using a propriatary file system formated HD mainly limited to 2.1GB files,
with an FTP server.
If you are lucky enough, it may support SaMBa/CIFS, Unison, and perhaps UPnP
too...

My solution was FreeNAS. I'm using a PII 400MHz/386MB RAM server running
FreeNAS since 2007. You get a real bunch of functionnality and you can
assemble your project server right as you need it and make it grow when you
need it.

Mine runs 24/7 since then with some reboots for maintenance/update jobs and
has now 2.5TB storage capacity and only sky's the limit... Using it merely
for backups, sharing files over my LAN, installation/update server for the
local computers running Linux; actually three complete MDV editions mirrored
for quicker system updates or installations.

It can also work as UPnP server, NFS HDD, Rsync server, Web server, i-Tunes
server, DynDNS and has some other possible functions.

If you're interrested, you can take a look at:
