Been through that 1 too many times. What a pain!

Interesting you should use that as an example, I tried to do the above
when I tried Debian 0.93r5 (?). The sequence of events was:
	# dpkg -r sendmail
"Sorry Dave I can't do that. A lot of packages depending on sendmail"
	"or smail being present."
Hmmm
	# dpkg -i smail
"Sorry but smail conflicts with sendmail that is already installed"
Hmmm
	# dpkg -r --do-it-or-die sendmail
"Sorry Dave I can't do that. A lot of packages depending on sendmail"
	"or smail being present."
Hmmm
	# dpkg -i --i-really-god-damn-mean-it smail
"Sorry but smail conflicts with sendmail that is already installed"
Hmmm
	# rm -f /usr/sbin/sendmail
Yeah that felt good! But it didn't help.

This was probably a problem with the old Debian and has been fixed (I hope).

Yep, no catch 22 system with RedHat. Although it does mean that the newbie
can twist the system badly if they don't know what they are doing.

Cheers.
